Frequently asked questions
We’re thinking of travelling by train – there will be eight of us – can we get a discount?
Group travel discounts apply to groups of 10 or more – however smaller groups may benefit from other Northern tickets such as DUO tickets or Rail Ranger and Rover tickets.
There are 10 or more in our group – can we claim the group travel discount?
Yes if you meet certain criteria.
What are the criteria for obtaining group travel discount?
The discount is subject to availability and may not be available if other groups are already booked on to the train.
Groups of up to 35 in total can normally be accommodated.
Tickets must be booked through the Group Travel service on 0113 881 4604 as local ticket offices cannot give group discount if you turn up to buy tickets from them. The office is open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
You can also email Northern at specialist.sales@northernrailway.co.uk Travel must be undertaken outside peak times so after 9.30 and not between 4pm and 6pm.
Group travel can be booked well in advance of your planned trip but the Group Travel Service requires at least seven days notice of your intention to travel in order to process your request and send out tickets.
What is the discount for groups?
Subject to availability and eligibility, the discount is normally 26% off standard adult and child fares. For groups of 10 or more booked through the Group Travel Service 16 and 17 year olds qualify for child fares.
Our group wants to travel at the weekend – does the same criteria apply as during the week?
Yes, but there are no peak travel time restrictions at weekends.
One of our group is in a wheelchair – do we need to tell you?
Yes, please tell us when you book if your group has any special needs so we can make the necessary arrangements.
We are a group of 10 or more travelling at short notice – can we claim a group travel discount?
No – the group travel discount can only be claimed through the Group Travel Service who require seven days notice.
Groups can travel on Northern services at short notice but won’t receive a group travel discount.
We are a group of 10 or more travelling at peak times – can we claim a group travel discount?
No – discounts are only available through the Group Travel Service who will book you on to an off-peak service to avoid over-crowding.
